How To Juggle Time As A College Student

March 1st, 2010 by ultimening

With college tuition higher than ever before, many are searching for a way to cut down on costs. While scholarships are available to many students, often they are only a “drop in the bucket” in the fuller picture of college expenses. Other students employ themselves in work study programs, but often find that they have great difficulty balancing their scholastic studies and work schedules. Although the financial advantages of enrolling in such programs are obvious, the stress toll can be extremely high. However, there still remains a way to cut down on the stress factor of college and possibly even the tuition costs.

This method is known as CLEP testing, which is a program offered by Collegeboard. Although various “higher ranked” universities do not accept CLEP tests as replacements for college credit hours, many other universities still accept them. CLEP tests are a good way for incoming freshman (or other students) to burn out several college courses, such as general education requirements.

The advantages of taking such tests are obvious. First, for colleges that may ask an enrolled student to pay per credit hour, getting rid of a few required credits for less than what the actual cost of attending the class would be is a clear positive aspect of such tests. Although many colleges have set tuition prices no matter how many courses a student is taking, CLEP tests still offer financial benefits for those students. Since getting rid of a few required classes will enable students to possibly enjoy more free time (depending on how they decide to plan their schedule), students could have more time to work jobs; with a full schedule filled with general education requirements they might be stressed out trying to juggle working a job and attending classes. In addition to this, CLEP tests may assist other students in keeping good grade point averages. Since the tests award students credits as long as they pass them, a student never has to worry about maintaining his grade in that class and can therefore devote more time to other classes and thereby maintain a steady, high grade point average.

Some, however, may balk at the idea of taking a CLEP test due to the cost. Although the cost of taking it may be cheaper than taking the class at a university, they might see the approximately eighty dollar price tag as too high of a gamble for them. Such doubters might find relief knowing that the CLEP tests only require a passing score of fifty. (Scores are calculated according to a grading scale; fifty does NOT necessarily mean fifty percent). Also, only correct answers go towards a tester's final score; it is therefore to his advantage to answer every question, even if he is only guessing. There are generally around four to five possible answer choices for a question, so a tester's chance of guessing accurately is fairly high. Finally, collegeboard offers CLEP study guides (for a fee) which provide potential testers with review material aimed at assisting them to pass the exam. The time studying with such material combined with taking the approximately two hour exam time is still less than the time a university student would spend studying for exams and writing papers for the same course in college.

CLEP tests are offered in a wide variety of subjects and allow students to receive credit for material they may have learned outside of the classroom. They can aid in reducing the cost of attending college, and they may allow a student to have more free time or a more relaxed schedule.

Hi! Welcome to my blog! =)

February 10th, 2010 by ultimening

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog website. I'm so delighted to begin this journey with my blog. In the past, I've had several blogs that I used to write down my thoughts about the the world, technology and anything interesting happening in my life. But I gave those away soon after.

Right now, I'm hoping to have a better grasp on blogging with more life experiences and I hope more interesting things to write about. I hope to one day maybe have to own a domain of my own, and have my site become famous one day.

Travelling has been an huge part of my life for around 2 decades now. I've travelled virtually every part of the planet, Asia, Europe, America, and so on. I look at myself as a seasoned traveller, and I have had many great experiences around the world. Whenever I travel, I carry my notebook with me, as I find it unrenounceable, especially with taking notes on the go. I like to sit and take out my laptop, open it up with a nice hot cup of black coffee, and then just read the latest happenings from around the globe, or start writing down my thoughts as I sip on some good, coffee.

Another thing that bothers me frequently is politics. Oftentimes, international policy discussions that happen at government levels seem far away, but they have strong influence on our lives. I hope to write about some of this in my blog as well. On a lighter note, I'm pretty much into gadgets and I enjoy to read, so I hope to have some posts about those topics too. I'm reading a book about business right now, and I normally read a new book every few weeks. I find the change in perspective engaging and fresh, and I like how you can get new ideas from reading books.

I hope you'll find my blog an pleasant read, and I look forward to continue this journey with all of you.
